The 10th Safaricom Sports Personality of the Year,SOYA, will be held on December 6th in Nairobi. This edition will coincide with the country's celebration of 50 years since independence and the organizers plan to make this year's award bigger and 'special'.

"We will announce the venue and any development if any next week,"said Omulo Okoth, the SOYA chair of panelists.

Paul Tergat, the SOYA founder and chairman said organizers will start monitoring whether winners of various categories actually receive their cash rewards. This was in reaction to a delay in payment by the Football Kenya Federation,FKF,which took close to nine months to hand over Ksh.100,000 to the national under 20 women's team that won the best Club category last year.

"We always give the money through federations but we would like to follow it up going forward. That issue has come to my attention now but we would like to follow up and see that winners get their awards" added Tergat the newly elected IOC member.

Tergat also took the chance to urge sports federations in the country to look at improving the living standards of sports persons adding that is the only way Kenya can have more disciplines in Olympics.

"All sports federations should put the interest of athletes ahead of everything else, thats the only way we can help improve our sports," said Tergat.

"Lets focus our energy on developing sports, its not in our interest to see wrangles in various federations. Once we put our personal interest ahead, we lose focus on where we want to go."

On Thursday, National Bank of Kenya NBK boosted the SOYA kitty with about Ksh. 3 million, Safaricom, the title sponsors are expected to announce their sponsorship for this edition next Tuesday.
