Two close contests marked the start of Cecafa Kagame Club Cup matches in El Fashir City, North Darfur on Wednesday afternoon.

They both ended in 1-0 victories, for former champions APR of Rwanda over Somalia’s Elman and Burundi’s Vital’O edging local favourite team El Merriekh El Fashir. The 2013 Kagame Cup edition kicked off amid fanfare in Sudan’s newest and most modern Stadium in Kadugli City, South Kordofan on Tuesday.

But the residents of El Fashir also spared nothing to stage a colourful Olympic Games-style opening ceremony of their own on the lush green natural grass of a refurbished El Fashir City Stadium. There was music, dancing, marching and display of general arts. Osman Mohamed Yousif Kabir, the North Darfur Governor, led thousands of Darfurians - and also a large population of soccer hungry citizens from other parts of the world who work here - for a rare treatment of international sport.

The competitive football mood was set right by a Somali club, Elman, refusing to be cowed by three-time Kagame Cup winners, APR. The Rwandese just managed to escape with victory after the Somalis missed a penalty award.

Then the local El Merriekh El Fashir fought a titanic battle with a very experienced Vital’O side. After the Burundi team had scored an early fourth minute goal(Damour Nkurunziza), they had to withstand blistering attacks right to the final whistle.

El Merriekh missed several great chances including one that would have tied the match at the death. One notable aspect of the Darfur club is the presence of some very exciting foreign players including African attackers Williams Adams and David Nwosu (a Nigerian striker) and excellent midfield Joseph Kabagambe, a Ugandan.

The 11-team tournament ends on July 1. Results Elman (Somalia) 0 APR (Rwanda) 1, El Merriekh 0 Vital’O (Burundi) 1.
