Mivumoni Qualify For Boys’ Volleyball Semis

Mivumoni secondary Coast Region’s volley champions sailed easily to the semifinals on the second day of the Airtel Rising Stars National secondary schools Term 2B with a 3-2 (25-19, 23-15, 22-25, 25-19, 15-12) victory over Pe Hill School of Western Region at Shanzu Teachers College Wednesday.

Mivumoni were composed and won the first set 25-19 but lost the second 23-15 and third 22-25 before recovering to win the next decisive two sets 25-19 and 15-12.

In the opening match of the day, Hospital Hill brushed past Pe Hill 3-0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-17).

In the girls’ matches, Kwanthanze from Eastern Region qualified for the semi finals with two straight wins.

Kwanthanze’s towering and promising central attackers Teresa Ewet, Ann Lowem, Yvone Kiitha,Jancinta Mueni, Joyce Njeri, Faith Kimongo, Teresa Nyambura and libero Irene Mbula were impressive. Nairobi’s Buru Buru Girls of Nairobi beat Othoro of Nyanza by the same margin to head in pool B.

Mike Alunga scored four goals as Upper Hill overran Tetu 6-1 in football. He scored goals in the 19th, 24th, 28th and 59th minutes. Calvin Odong scored a brace in the 15th and 53rd minutes. Yusuf Swaleh’s penalty in the 51st minute was the consolation for Tetu.

Kakamega High, the 10-time football champions, Kakamega secured their slot in the semi final after beating Tetu High 2-1 and Kibirichia 4-1.

The game against Upper Hill will be a battle for the top spot in the group after both sides managed wins in their first two matches.

Goals by Dorcas Kemunto, Captain Fadhime Hamisi and Christine Njoki saw Nairobi’s Olympic Girls beat Kilifi Mixed Secondary 3-0 to secure a place in the semifinals.

Olympic who thrashed Gataragwa secondary 11-0 in the quarters had Doreen Sangwae netting two goals in the 26th and 30th minutes while Christine Njioko scored the third goal in the 56th minute .

This was the second defeat for Gataragwa in as many matches. Rift Valley champions Tartar Girls beat Ibinzo Girls' from Western by a solitary goal to advance to the semi-finals.

Neddy Atieno scored from the spot in the 62nd minute. Tartar’s head Coach Julius Natoka said that they are now eyeing the finals.

“Last year we let it go to Bishop Njenga in the last match, but this year we are determined to take it home,” Natoka assured. In the other match of the group, played at the Shimo la Tewa grounds St John’s Kaloleni beat Chogoria 5-1 to make the semi-finals.

Tartar of Rift Valley dismissed Chogoria Girls 5-0 in their second match as Kilifi Mixed and Kobala drew 2-2. Kobala barely broke a sweeat in their 8-0 drubbing of Gataragwa.
