Sofapaka reclaimed third spot on the Kenyan Premier League standings with a resounding 4-1 victory over Thika United Saturday at the Thika Municipal Stadium.

The win stemmed a three-match winless run that was threatening to derail the team’s league campaign. Predatory veteran striker, John Baraza, made clear his intentions of winning the KPL golden boot award with a brace that took his season’s tally to 16 goals.

Congolese-born Kenyan international, Bob Mugalia and vastly experienced centre back, Edgar ‘Fighter’ Ochieng added two more goals to confine Thika to rare home defeat. Sofapaka got off the blocks quickly with a 12th minute goal from Baraza through a penalty after Vincent Nyaberi handled the ball in the box.

Moments later, Baraza turned provider laying a neat pass to strike partner Mugalia for the second goal. Ochieng nodded in a free kick on the half hour mark to effectively put the match beyond Thika’s reach.

Baraza put the icing in the cake with a 63rd minute strike. Thika’s lone goal was scored by Moses Arita in the 88th minute.

Mathare United 1 Western Stima 0

In Kakamega, Mathare United continued their revival with a 1-0 win over hosts Western Stima at Bukhungu Stadium.

Andrew Tololwa drilled in a 32nd minute goal to give the ‘Slum Boys’ their second win in a row. On Friday evening, Rangers beat Sony Sugar 1-0 at Nairobi City Stadium to move ome place from the bottom of the table with 16 points.

Meanwhile, with the KPL Top 8 showdown between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia shrouded in uncertainty, three Kenyan Premier League matches are lined up for Sunday. Nairobi City Stars will away to Chemelil Sugar.

The Kawangware side will be seeking to put behind them a poor run that has seen them lose their two last matches to Leopards and Gor.

Edward Manoah’s Chemelil also suffered a 1-2 loss to Western Stima last weekend and will hoping to bounce back. In Naivasha, bottom side Oserian will host Muhoroni Youth in a match they must win to keep their survival hopes alive.

In another match sunday in Naivasha, Karuturi Sports will lock horns with KCB.
