Nov 02, 2010

Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana got off their campaign in the 7th African Women’s Championship to a flying start winning their opening group matches at the Sinaba Stadium in South Africa.

A first half hat-trick from striker Perpertua Nkwocha and second half efforts from Stella Mbachu and Francisca Ordega powered Nigeria’s Super Falcons to a 5-0 victory over Mali on Monday in their Group A encounter at the Sinaba Stadium.

The first match in Group B saw the defending champions Equatorial Guinea held to a 2-2 draw with Cameroon.

Jade Boho Sayo stunned the Cameroonians with a 2nd minute strike before Santana Barbosa doubled the lead on the 31st minute.

The 1st half ended with the defending champions going into the break with a 2-1 lead after Chigoue Nina’s free kick in the 45th minute.
Cameroonians then broke the hearts of the defending champions in the 51st minute as  striker Ngono Michele powered home to level scores at 2-2.

Ghana beat Algeria 2-1 in the other group B game.

Hosts South Africa got off their campaign on a winning note after beating Tanzania 2-1 in the tournament opener on Sunday.

Nigeria next play South Africa on Thursday, November 4 whilst Mali face Tanzania on the same day.

Although history seems to be on the side of Nigeria Super Falcons at the two week Championship, there could be some surprises by the hosts South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana and of course the defending champions Equatorial Guinea.
