athletes chase tickets for world Youth championships

Athletics Kenya will hold a two-day trial to pick the national squads for the World Youth Championship start Tuesday June 7, at Nyayo Stadium. 

The World Youth Championships are scheduled for July 6-11 in Lille, France while the Commonwealth Youth Games are planned for September 7-11 in Island of Man in Britain.

The trials will draw athletes from primary, secondary schools and colleges who already selected their respective teams.

World 6km junior cross country champion Faith Chepngetich is expected to spearhead primary schools, alongside Caroline Chepkoech, the African 6km junior cross country champion.

According to Athletics Kenya (AK) public relations officer Peter Angwenyi, the Trials which are being sponsored by National Bank of Kenya  will strictly feature athletes born in 1994/95.

“Primary and secondary schools have just ended their championships in Nyeri and Meru respectively while colleges held their event two weeks ago in Kericho,” said Angwenyi.

At secondary level, Leonard Kosencha, winner of the gold over the 800m and silver in the 400m at the East Africa regional youth championship, will be the man to watch. Others will include Patrick Muaka, Nicholas Togom ,Gideon Kipketer, Dennis Kipruto, Edwin Mokua; all represented the country at the Africa cross country championships.

The athletes selected will report for residential training on June 17, until they depart for France on July 2.
