Badminton host Games trials as it readies to host International event

Kenya Badminton Association holds its trial for the All Africa and the Commonwealth Youth games this weekend at the Premier Club,Nairobi.

The association will use the two day trials to select their team for the All Africa Games in Mozambique and the Youth Games in the Isle of Man in the UK but also as a build up for the national team players ahead of the International Badminton championships set for later this month in Nairobi.

 The Kenya Badminton Association Chairlady Anna Maina about 20 countries have confirmed their participation for the International event set for June 23-26 at the Moi International Sports Complex Nairobi.

Beside the defending champions South Africa other countries expected at the event are Uganda, Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria and Mauritius while those from outside Africa are India, Vietnam, Russia, Peru, Czech Republic, Croatia, USA, Italy, Iran, Turkey, Slovakia, Guatemala, Iceland and Hungary.

"Everything is in place and we are ready to take them on. We have a total of 75 international entries from the 20 countries that have confirmed their participation. It has been a long time since we staged a championship of such magnitude, and I hope it will be a major success," Maina said.

Kenyan players comprising Victor Odera, Patrick Kinyua, Jiten Patel, Mercy Joseph, Lavina Martin and Sheila Wanjiru have been in residential training under Coach John Odhiambo at the Premier Club.

The championship which has a cash prize of approximately ksh.430,000 will not only earn the players World Ranking points but also qualification for the 2012 Olympics.
