Bitok to name Kenya volleyball squad next Wednesday

Oct 18, 2011

The newly appointed Kenya Women’s Volleyball coach, Paul Bitok will name his final squad of 12 players for the World Cup in Japan next Wednesday, 26.

Bitok who joined the team on Monday at their residential training camp at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani replaced the former head coach, David Lung’aho who is now his assistant on the technical bench.

The former Rwanda head coach is widely expected to include some of the new faces who have been training with the team in his final squad. Rose Mago, Ruth Cheng’etich, Elizabeth Wafula, Elizabeth Wangeci, Florence Moraa and Gaudencia Makhoha are among the new faces in the national camp.

Makhoha, a Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) player is mostly likely to replace setter Jane Wacu who is not available for selection.

The Kenya volleyball Federation banned the setter indefinitely for alleged unethical conduct at last month’s All African Games in Maputo but the suspension was temporarily lifted which facilitated her travel for the just concluded World Club championships in Qatar with the Prisons squad.

“Unfortunately Wacu will not make it to the squad as it is now unless her suspension is lifted,”said Bitok. Makhoha who plays as an attacker boasts of international exposure having attended a UNICEF Volleyball trial in Rwanda early this year and her height will be a big boost to the side. She is also a former National Youth Talent Academy (NYTA) graduate.

The national women’s team will have chance to play a few friendly matches in Egypt and Japan against the local clubs in the two countries before they take on Germany in their first World Cup match on November 4.

The team will travel to Japan via Cairo, on October 27 where they will stay for a few days before proceeding to Nagano.

Their second match in the tournament, which will be played on a round robin basis, will be against defending champions Brazil.
