Co-Op Bank adds to KCA-U's winless run

The winless run by Kenya College of Accountancy- University (KCA-U) stretched further on Saturday when they lost their men’s Premier League fixture 59-79 to Co-operative Bank.

KCA-U won the first quarter 13-12 and Co-op Bank the second 28-13 as the bankers enjoyed a 40-26 halftime lead.

Co-op Bank won the third quarter 24-17 and KCA-U the fourth 16-15. Sila Awuor led scoring for the bankers with 20 points and Job Byron added 14. Riek Tot top-scored for KCA-U with 13 points and Collins Odhiambo added nine.

With only one win so far, Lions were chasing their second win when they played Nairobi City Thunder. They appeared on course after dominating first half play and led 34-25 at halftime.

But crumbled in the second half to lose 59-71. In the first quarter, Dennis Opiyo struck two straight three-pointers to tie 14-14 for Lions from the first shot with the second changing the lead 17-16 in their favour.

Humphrey Mbande fired another three-pointer as Lions won the quarter 20-18. Lions continued to dominate Thunder and opened up a 10-point lead in the second quarter at 33-23 and won 14-7.

The second half was Thunder’s turn to dominate as they won the third quarter 16-9. They tied 39-39 with 1:22 to play from a three-pointer by Griffin Ligare.

Collins Wekesa gave Lions the lead with a basket and they led 43-41 at the close of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Patrick Koriana fired a three-pointer that gave Thunder a 44-43 lead and went on to open a 15-point gap at 66-51.

Thunder won the quarter 30-16 and had Griffin Ligare top score with 21 points, Koriana scored 17 and Matthew Gurton finished with 14 points.

Dennis Opiyo scored 12 points for Lions, Wekesa added 11 and Bryan Ocholla scored eight.

USIU-A 68 Umoja 56

The United States International University- Africa (USIU-A) beat Umoja 68-56 with Derrick Juma scoring 19 points, Yoni Wanambiro added 18 and Alex Ramazani accounted for 15 points.

Michael Munene scored three three-pointers to lead scoring for Umoja with 12 points. Umoja won the first quarter 18-14 with USIU-A winning 13-10 in the second, 18-15 in the third and 21-13 in the fourth.

In the highlight game of the day, Strathmore University Blades beat Equity Bank 61-53. Equity won the first quarter 21-18 after making a comeback.

Blades had gone up by 11 points leading 14-3. Frank Manyala scored two crucial baskets that gave the bankers a 19-18 lead towards the end of the quarter. Blades had led 2-0 before Equity tied 2-2.

Peter Shilton sunk a three-pointer as the students began their dominance early enough. Blades won 14-13 in the second quarter after each team led once; Blades at 28-27 and Equity at 29-28.

George Okoth tied 34-34 with a basket for Blades early into the third quarter and gave the students a 36-34 lead from the second basket.

Ian Wachiye restored the lead to Equity 37-36 with a three-pointer before Pascal Nabwana made it 38-37 for Blades. Irungu Maina who made exciting moves in the game gave Equity a 39-38 lead with two points but the quarter tied 11-11.

Blades led 46-45 in the fourth quarter from a three-pointer by Okoth but Brian Obimbo turned back the lead to Equity with a basket.

When Blades led 49-47, they pressed Equity hard to win key possession from turnovers while Emmanuel Soja secured their rebounding. Blades won the quarter 18-8 and had Shilton score 16 points with Soja and Cliff Alela scoring 10 each.

Wachiye top scored for Equity with 11 points as Irungu and Felix Omondi scored 10 points each.
