Co-Operative Bank narrowly beats Lions

Trailblazers and Lions suffered marginal losses to Nairobi City Thunder and Co-operative Bank respectively in the men’s Premier League on Sunday at Upper Hill School.

Coming to the weekend with five straight losses, Lions was chasing their first win but could not crack Co-op Bank who won 58-52 after leading 31-21 at halftime.

Lions had a big game in the third quarter they won 21-11 but Co-op Bank had an upper hand in the first quarter 17-12, the second 14-9 and the fourth 16-10.

Titus Musembi scored 15 points for the bankers and George Obumbo added 11. John Ocholla top scored for Lions with 14 points while Bryan Kuria scored 10.

Thunder required the individual effort of Griffin Ligare to come down from 21-29 at halftime and beat Trailblazers 67-60.

Ligare scored a game-high 34 points to lead the comeback after Trailblazers won the first two quarters 13-12 and 16-9 respectively.

The third quarter was Thunder’s turnaround as they convincingly won 23-8 before the fourth tied 23-23. Ishmael Nyamache scored 19 points for Trailblazers.

Easy task

In the women’s Premier League, Equity Bank and Co-op Bank had an easy task against their opponents after registering wins.

Equity Bank beat Kenyatta University Oryx 59-23 from a 29-8 halftime lead. The bankers won all quarters 14-4, 15-4, 8-6 and 22-9 respectively.

Hilda Indasi scored 14 points for Equity Bank and Susan Akinyi added 12. Beryl Okoth had six points for Kenyatta University.

In the other game, Co-op bank lost the first half contest but won the second to beat Storms 45-33. Storms led 21-10 at halftime after winning the first quarter 10-5 and the second 11-5.

The bankers won third quarter 9-3 before killing off the game with a dominant 26-9 score in the fourth quarter. Irene Makori scored 13 points for Co-op Bank while Angela Luchivya scored five for Storms.

Egerton and Daystar universities won in the women’s Division I. Egerton won by half a basket beating Gladiators 35-34.

Gladiators won the first quarter 9-4 but Egerton claimed the second 19-8, the third 12-9 and Gladiators the fourth 8-0.

Mercy Wangeci scored 10 points for Egerton and Imelda Mukabane had nine for Gladiators.

Daystar beat Kenya College of Accountancy- University (KCA-U) 41-29 winning the first quarter 13-6, the third 10-9 and the fourth 13-8. KCA-U won the second quarter 6-5 and had Maryanne Kanja scoring 13 points.

June Achieng top scored for Daystar with 16 points and Steffi Ngarire added 14.
