Dunford wins at World Cup meet in Dubai

Kenyan Jason Dunford carried on his  superb post-Olympics form winning the gold medal in the men’s 50m Butterfly in 22.77 seconds on Tuesday at the opening meet of the FINA World cup series in Dubai.

Once away, Dunford’s strong start helped him to stay ahead of a charging and determined South African Chad Le Clos the Olympic champion in 200m Fly, who finished 0.09 seconds behind the Kenyan who retained the Gold he won last year.

Roland Schoeman, a Seasoned South African swimmer, a four time Olympian finished third in 22.94. Le Clos who beat American Michael Phelps to the gold in the 200m Butterfly at the Olympics however comfortably won the event in Dubai in 1:51.61.

Dunford,buoyed by a strong showing at the African championships last month in Nairobi where he picked three gold medals, began his chase for World cup honours strongly qualifying second for the finals in 23.10 in the 25m pool. His time was 0.07 seconds behind the winner Schoeman.

However, Dunford failed to defend his 100m Freestyle crown as he was relagated to seventh in the 100m Freestyle final won by Australian Youngester Kennth To in46.89. American Antony Ervinplaced second 0.15 seconds with Schoeman third in 47.24. The Kenyan timed 48.51,1.62 seconds behind the winner.

The Commonwealth Gold medalist from New Delhi,will be back to the pool on Wednesday looking to defend his 50m Freestyle gold medal he won in Dubai last year and complete a double by winning the 100m Fly. The five week eight stop series ends in Singapore on November 11.
