Fiery Malawi Flames arrive in the country

A youthful Malawi Flames squad arrived in the country on Wednesday night confident of beating Kenya in Saturday’s 2014 World Cup qualifier.

Big manes of veterans like captain Peter Mponda, Malawian Premier League top scorer Chiukepo Msowoya, Elvis Katoka and Fischer Kondone were all missing from 21 man team that crossed over from Tanzania on Wednesday evening.

But head coach Kinaah Phiri is upbeat that the youngsters will deliver on math day at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani.

“We expect a tough match on Saturday. Kenya is a good team with quality players, but I have faith in the young players in my squad”, Phiri said.

“We have a young team and I am keen to gauge their performance in Nairobi ahead of our upcoming matches against Nigeria and Chad”, added Phiri on arrival on at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

In the absence of Malawian league’s top scorer Chikuepo Msowoya, Phiri will is likely to test young strikers Zicco Mokonda, Jimmy Zakazaka and Robin Ngalande.

Overlapping defender Foster Namwela and Ndaziona Chatsaliva are the other key players in Phiri’s squad.

Though the Flames are buoyed by the fact that they have gotten the better of the Stars in their most recent encounters, the team they will face on Saturday will be totally different from the one they beat 2-0 Stars last December during the Tusker Cecafa Challenge Cup in Dar es Salaam.

Morale is high within the Kenyan camp after the arrival of inspirational team captain Dennis Oliech early this week. Other top foreign-based players in camp are Celtic midfielder Victor Mugubi, Patrick Oboya and Patrick Osiako.

Malawi, who are booked at the upmarket Karen Homes Hotel, had first training session yesterday at the Karen Cooperative Grounds. The team will have a feel the match venue on Friday evening. Malawi drew against Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars and Zanzibar Heroes in the build up to the match.
