Gor draws AFC in top 8 tournament

Football Kenya Limited, FKL cup champions Gor Mahia has been paired with with their arch rivals, AFC Leopards as cup holders Ulinzi draws Chemelil Sugar in the Kenya Premier League top eight tournament.

Gor Mahia who were  bundled out in the second stage of the same tournament last year will meet Ingwe in the first match of the tournament on March 7.

The draw was conducted by Football Kenya Federation chairman, Sam Nyamweya Thursday.  

AFC Leopard head coach, Jan Koops was pleased with the draw. "I always find it interesting playing against Gor. You must aim to win any game irrespective of the team you play against, i think the draw was good for the competition and the fans," said Koops who admitted that Gor has the best squad this season.

This weekend Sony Sugar will meet Sofapaka in the KPL and the two teams faces off in the first leg of the tournament in what will be a repeat of last year's opener and the 'batoto ba Mungu' head coach Salim Ali who deputized Sony's Zedekiah Otieno during their stint with the national team said that he will be going all out to beat the Awendo based out fit.

The KPL champions, Tusker who were beaten by Ulinzi in the finals last year will play Rangers while Benjamin Nyangweso keen to retain the trophy will be facing Chemelil Sugar.

All matches will be played at the mid week at the Nyayo national stadium under flood light and the winner between Gor and AFC Leopards will be meeting the winner between Rangers and Tusker while the winner between Ulinzi/Chemelil will meet the winner between Sofapaka and Sony in the semi final stage.

The winner of the tournament will pocket Ksh. 1 million and a trophy.

Meanwhile,Three Kenyan Premier League (KPL) matches scheduled for this weekend have been postponed to give the national football team, Harambee Stars, ample time to prepare for next week’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Togo in Nairobi.

A statement sent by KPL to the media read in part:“Kindly note that Round 3 Sunday matches have been postponed to a later date due to the national team Harambee Stars engagement in a CAF match against Togo on Wednesday February 29th 2012."

The affected matches are Mathare United versus KCB (City Stadium), Rangers versus Western Stima and the high-billed clash featuring defending champions Tusker and Gor Mahia that would have been played at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The other four matches scheduled for Saturday will go on as initially planned.
