Impala Beat KCB For ‘Grand Slam’

Impala RFC beat Kenya Commercial Bank 35-34 in the season ending Grand Slam tie at the RFUEA Grounds.

Innocent Simiyu put the Gazelles 3-0 up with a second minute penalty before Fabian Olando's eighth minute try saw KCB take a 5-3 lead. Duncan Ekasi restored Impala's lead when he touched down three minutes later as KCB seemed to be crumbling apart.  Simiyu's conversion taking the scores to 10-3. Impala would take advantage of slack KCB defending, Simiyu scoring and converting his on sixteen minutes with the score board reading 17-3 in Impala's favor.

Seventeen minutes on the clock, and Impala looked like handing KCB a thrashing.
 Simiyu slotted a penalty on thirty minutes before converting Vincent Mose's try either side of Olando's penalty.

KCB replacement Ken Isindu grounded the ball one minute after resumption, cutting the deficit to 27-13 as his side finally started looking competitive. Another Simiyu penalty gave Impala a 30-13 lead with Kelvin Omiyo grounding the ball seconds later, giving his side a 35-13 lead. KCB Coach Howard Okwemba threw on Phil Wamae,Max Adaka, Calvins Biko and Derrick Wamalwa at various intervals during the intervening period and they would influence play in the intervening period.

Wamalwa soon played in Adaka who touched down with Olando converting for a 35-20 score line. The Lions would continue growing in confidence and Biko was soon rewarded with a try as his side went in pursuit of more points. Olando's conversion saw KCB within eight points of Impala with precious little time left on the ticker.

Olando, outstanding all afternoon, landed his brace right on the death, his conversion sailing over the posts but it was a case of too little too late as Impala held on for the 35-34 result.
