Kenya draws tough group in Afro women Championship

Kenya national women basketball team will play in a tough Group B of the 2013 AfroBasket championship slated for September 20-29 in Maputo, Mozambique.

According to the draw conducted and released on Friday by FIBA-Africa, Kenya will play alongside Angola, Mali, Cameroon, Cape Verde and Nigeria. Group A has the hosts Mozambique, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, the yet to be known Zone I representative, Egypt and Zimbabwe.

Kenya will open her campaign against Cameroon on September 20 before playing Nigeria a day later.

On day three, Kenya will be up against Angola and will be back on the court on September 24 against Mali before winding up their campaign with an easy match against Cape Verde on September 25.

Ronnie Owino, Kenya head coach, appreciated the fact that his side has been pooled in a very strong group but exuded confidence that they are up to the challenge.

“Yes, it is really a tough group for us. We expect great competition from Angola, Mali and Nigeria which are good sides.”

The team has already resumed training ahead of the championship.
