Kenya will meet USA in the Challenge Trophy semi-final after they beat Russia 24-5 and the USA edged out Japan in the quarter finals of the Wellington Sevens, the third tournament in the World Rugby Sevens World Series.

In the match against Russia, Kenya weathered a stormy start before overcoming a physical Russian side who dictated the opening minutes.

They pinned Kenya in their own 22 but a solid defense kept them from the Kenya try line. Russia were awarded two penalties with the second spilled on the way to the tryline from a heavy tackle by Kenya.

From a scrum inside their five, Sam Oliech broke through, handed off one defender before racing to score under the posts for the opening try. He converted for a 7-0 lead.

There was a lull before Billy Odhiambo scored the second powering over the line from two tackles. Just before the end of this half, Nelson Oyoo drew two defenders before giving an inside pass to William Ambaka to score under the posts. Oliech missed the easy conversion as Kenya led 17-0 at halftime.

On resumption, Russia pulled one back before Dan Sikuta slipped past feeble tackles after a pass from Injera to score neat the posts. Eden Agero converted.
