Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas: Kenya will face Chile in the quarter final of the newly introduced Challenge Trophy quarter finals after edging out a gritty Russia in the last Pool C match of the World Rugby Sevens World Series match at the Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas.

Some of the teams who will be chasing a maximum eight points in this category are France who kick off the knock-out section by playing against Japan. Later, Scotland and Wales face off before Samoa tackle Russia.

In the cup competition, South Africa who topped Pool A after beating Wales 21-7 in their last Pool A match will be up against Australia in the main cup quarter final.

Argentina who caused the first upset of the tournament by beating New Zealand 12-10 to top Pool C will play against hosts USA paving way for the match between defending champions Fiji and Canada. England and New Zealand face off in the last match of the second day.

Kenya 12 Russia 10

In this match, Kenya started on a false note when the kick by Sam Oliech did not go over the 10 meter mark. Russia regained possession and exerted pressure in the Kenya half.

They were awarded a penalty inside Kenya’s five and Eme Patris Peki scored a try after two minutes. German Davydov missed the conversion. On the restart, Kenya failed to claim a high ball which drifted into touch in their five.

From the line out, Bush Mwale made a good run before the ball changed hands between Nelson Oyoo and Billy Odhiambo.

When Dmitry Sukhin was sent to the sin bin for a foul on Odhiambo, Kenya failed to use the numerical advantage and soaked pressure from the Russians. Oyoo broke loose but lacked support.

With only a few seconds to the end of this half, Collins Injera set up William Ambaka for a try. Oliech missed the conversion for a 5-5 score at halftime.

On resumption, a quickly taken penalty by Injera saw Andrew Amonde power over under the posts. Oliech converted for Kenya to lead 12-5. Alexey Kaplin pulled one back for Russia.
