Leopards fire 10 players over poor perfomance

May 25, 2011

AFC Leopards has sacked 10 players  in what the club management termed as the ‘players lack of commitment and poor  performance.'

Among the casualties are Congolese trio of Itubu Imbem, Demonde Selenga, and Hugo Nzoka.

Other players who have been shown the door include Laban Tshimonjero, Gedion Israel, goalkeeper David Kutwa, Douglas Okumu, Edgar Waudo and Shaban Ramadhan.

Team Manager Bernard "Imboko"Onyango  said that  the affected players  had shown little commitment  to the club.

"Their performance was quite wanting. They never played  with any purpose and  you could read from their performance  they had a hidden agenda", Onyango said.

Onyango further explained that the move was aimed at reviving the teams' dwindling fortunes in the league.

"After dropping the ten, we still have 20 players who can steer  the  team through the remaining matches of the league's first leg."

He revealed that Leopards intends to embark on an aggressive player recruitment during the mid-season transfer window to replace the sacked players.

"We must win our next few matches to gain confidence. We have gone for so long without winning. The team's dismal performance is quite disturbing even to our sponsors” he said.

Leopards, who currently lie eighth in the Kenyan Premier League standings with 16 points, lost their last match 2-1 to Sony Sugar at Nyayo National Stadium.

Meanwhile, in a new development, the club has has partnered with Smart TV to produce a dedicated TV  channel dubbed ‘Ingwe TV’ valued at more than Sh60 million.

The deal was signed on wednesday by Leopards chairman Alex Magelo and Smart TV Chief Executive Officer Daniel Kagwe in Nairobi and will take effect immediately.

The key components of the agreement include the  production of the TV channel, media promotion and monetary grant to meet specific club budgetary obligations.

The partnership, a first of its kind in East Africa, is aimed at providing content to the  6 million supporters of the club worldwide through various programs.

Airing on Smart TV’s African Sports Network (ASN) channel, Ingwe TV will play a key role in enhancing the image and profile of the club besides exposing talent to the international market.
