Leopards hold Mathare

Sep 29, 2010

AFC Leopards scored a last gasp goal to salvage a point against Mathare United in a thrilling high-scoring match that ended 3-3.

Both teams created numerous scoring chances but it was Mathare who drew first blood in the 6th minute through Andrew Tololwa. 'Ingwe' turned on the heat with two quick fire goals in the 21st and 27th minute through the indefatigable skipper Demonde Selenga and Joseph Okumu.

The game took a new complexion after the breather with Mathare taking the game to Leopards who showed glaring frailties in set-piece situations.

Two corners resulted in Mathare drawing level and then taking the lead through James Omondi (49) and Simon Mburu (65).

A lapse in concentration within the Mathare rear guard cost them sure victory when Congolese striker Ekene Umekwe ghosted between their center backs to head into an empty net in the 87th minute.

Joseph Omondi's angled shot nearly turned the game on its head yet again in favour of Mathare but the fiercely struck ball cannoned off the base of the far post.

The two team's positions remain unchanged with Mathare seventh on 34 points followed by AFC Leopards on 34.

League matches take a two-week break till October 16 for the last five matches of the 2010 season.
