Major Changes for 2013 Rugby Super Series

The 11th Rugby Super Series has been reorganized and various Franchises re-named with a local flavor.

From now henceforth, there will be six franchises, representative of the bulk of the regions. Besides the restructuring which happens periodically, the franchises will now have a Swahili name.

There is also a change in the management where Sasha Mutai takes over as chairman from Aggrey Chabeda and George Mbaye becomes the new tournament director replacing Herbert Mwachiro.

According to the organizers, the changes will help continue the spread of rugby and tap new talent which is one of the aims of the Rugby Services department at the Kenya Rugby Union headed by national 15’s coach Michael ‘Tank’ Otieno.

It is not clear whether the Ugandan teams will also adopt Swahili names to conform with the regional cooperation.

Franchises Adopt Swahili Names Swila (Cobra) franchise will be made up of Impala, Nondescripts RUFC and Kenya Harlequin FC. Mwamba, KCB and Homeboyz will be combined to form the Simba (Lions) franchise while Menengai Oil Nakuru, Egerton University, Moi University, Eldoret and Kitale will form the Ndovu (Elephant).

The Universities franchise will now be known as Kengewa (Hawk). Kisumu and Kakamega will form the Kiboko (Hippo) while the Coast franchise will be called Mamba (Crocodile).

The coaching staff for all the franchises have already been selected.
