Kenya’s top footballer Macdonald Mariga’s historic affair with Italian soccer giants Inter Milan finally came to an end on Wednesday after Real Sociadad agreed on a deal for undisclosed fee for a temporary move that will keep him at the Spanish club until June 2012.

According to an official communication posted on the clubs website, the agreement includes an option of a permanent move to the Basque club popularly known as the txuri-urdin at the end of the season.

The deal to sign the 24- year old was confirmed last week but with the paper work complete pending medical tests, Mariga now becomes the first Kenyan to feature in the La Liga. Mariga was part of one of Inter’s most successful squads that lifted the Champions League trophy, La Liga and the Spanish cup in the 2010 season.

He was part of the new signings who joined the club during Real Madrid’s coach Jose Mourinho’s tenure at Inter .

He joined the Nerazurris on February 2010 from another Italian club Parma. Inter who struggled in all their competitions last season are reportedly in the red and are looking to sign more home grown players to bolster their squad following a mass exodus of key players led by Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o who is destined to join Russian club Anzhi.

Sociedad on the other hand are seeking a strong finish in La Liga this season after a 15 place finish last year. The team made a come back to top-flight football last season after they were relegated from the 20-team Spanish league in the 2006/7.

The Spanish club-two time winners of La Liga in 1980/81 & 1981/82 as well as the Copa Del Rey termed Mariga’s move ‘a a key signing’ in the Spanish league campaign.
