Masaku Sparks survive late rally

  • Masaku Sparks rallied to overcome a spirited Western Delight at Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium.

Masaku Sparks survived a late fight by Western Delight to win 53-49 in a women’s Premier League game played on Saturday at Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium.

Going to the fourth quarter, Masaku led 46-29 after winning the first three quarters 14-5, 18-11 and 14-13. Western Delight who were chasing their second win played out with determination in fourth quarter winning 20-7 but fell short of a win.

Linet Atieno top scored for Masaku with 14 points, Pamela Sinda added eight and Linda Alando finished with seven. Captain Catherine Akinyi was the top scorer for Western Delight with 15 points having scored all for her team in first quarter from three free shots and a basket.

Hillavi Ayodi also had 13 points for the visitors who scored 17 points from free shots. Masaku made one three-pointer and scored 10 free shots.

United States International University- Africa (USIU-A) bounced back from their loss to Equity Bank last weekend with a 70-52 win over Co-operative Bank.

The champions put up a dominant play winning three quarters and leading for 40 minutes. In the first quarter, they won 15-9. USIU-A opened play with an 8-0 scoring run with Sarah Chan scoring six points in five minutes.

They had the biggest lead of the quarter of 10 points at 12-2. A 15-5 score in the second quarter helped the students lead 30-14 at halftime after extending their lead to 17 points at 30-13.

USIU-A had a 19-point lead in the third quarter of 37-18 but Co-op Bank won 19-17. In the fourth quarter, USIU-A had a lead of 21 points at 59-38 and won 23-19.

Chan finished with 30 points while Belinda Okoth top scored for Co-op Bank with 20 points. Both teams scored nine points from the three-point line with Co-op Bank making seven free shots against five for USIU-A.

In men’s lower division, Eldonets made a comeback to beat Africa Nazarene University (ANU) 47-43. Eldonets scored two free shots only in the whole of second quarter to lose 2-17 after winning first quarter 12-10.

ANU led 17-14 at halftime but Eldonets won third quarter 18-9 and the fourth 15-7 to complete the win. James Omweno scored 11 points in third quarter to top score for Eldonets with 20 while Jarret Brian scored highest for ANU with 13, Jonathan Kishibagaya had 10 and Salmon Mbisi scored nine.
