Matelong wins police 5000m title

Commonwealth 3000m steeplechase champion Richard Mateelong on Saturday won the 5000m as the Kenya Police  championships came to a close on saturday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Matelong was impressive in his win in 13:47.90 which was way off second placed Cyrus Kipruto who clocked 13:49.90 and with Fortis City half marathon champion Sammy Kitwara, clocking 13:49.74. The reigning Boston Marathon champion Geoffrey Mutai finished a distant fourth in 13:52.11.

 “The race was very tactical, running 5,000 is not easy and for me to win this race I had to use a lot of my brain,” said Matelong’.

After running the 1500m heats yesterday Commonwealth games 3,000m steeplechase champion Milcah Chemos opted for the two-lap race.

Chemos looking to buildup on her speed ahead of her diamond league races and the national trials later this month finished third in 2:04.35 behind Sheila Chesang’ of Vigilance who won the race in 2:03.62 with Cherono Koech finishing third in 2:04.1.

Kipkinui Mutai running for North Eastern province beat Geoffrey Kibet in the 800m in 1:47.37.

Kibet came second in 1:47.52 while third placed Francis Kakonzi clocked 1:47.59.

Monica Wangui won the 10,000 meters women in 33:20.7 ahead of Consolata Chemtai in 33:56.8 with Doreen Kitaka coming third at 34:04.0.

Both Paul Kimogal and Lydia Rotich won the men and women’s 3,000 meters steeplechase race.

Kimogal won his race 8:38.8 with Williy Komen who finishing second 8:39.1. 

Rotich won the women’s 9:51.6. 

Suleiman Simotwo clocked 3:46.8 to win gold for CID in the 1,500 meters when he beat second placed Andrew Yegon.
