Mean Machine Not In Main Impala Floodlit Draw

Mar 23, 2011
Mean Machine will not go into the main draw when the club representatives meet at Impala Club on Thursday to attend the draw for this year’s tournament. They were relegated after finishing bottom of the eight-team Kenya Cup league.

Impala officials have decided to give the slot to newly-promoted Homeboyz. But, Mean Machine could still compete in the Universities category which has been added to fill the void left by schools. The tournament will be held when schools are on April holidays. This is the first time in a long time that schools will not be part of the menu of Impala Floodlit tournament.

All the Kenya Cup sides Strathmore University, Kenya Harlequin FC, Impala, Nakuru, Kenya Commercial Bank, Nondescripts RUFC and Mwamba have been invited. The tournament begins a new cycle when Kenya embraced the international rugby calendar.
In winning Kenya Cup and the Enterprise Cup, Kenya Harlequin FC completed a remarkable season that saw them go unbeaten in both competitions.  They were constantly on the ropes during Saturday's Enterprise Cup 10-3 final win against Impala, relying on a huge stroke of luck to win the title against their more combative opponents who were rather unfortunate to end up on the wrong end of that particular score line.

Speaking after the game, Edward Kinyany said he was impressed by his side's resilience, given the fact that fatigue had began to ake its toll on the squad, particularly after demanding league and cup fixtures against Impala and KCB. He nonetheless heaped praise on his charges for their drive and ambition which drove towards the crown.

Homeboyz RFC ground out a 26-11 win over KCB II in the Mwamba Cup final with player/coach Murunga, a former Kenya Cup winning captain at KCB (2 tries)  and former KCB II flyhalf Steve Matioli,(1 try, 1 conversion,1 drop goal,2 penalties)  being the destroyers in chief. In clinching the Mwamba Cup, Homeboyz completed  the second division double, having won the Eric Shirley Shield a few weeks earlier.
