Multimedia University easy prey for USIU-A

A hat trick each by Kenyan International Rhoda Kuria and captain Beatrice Mbugua steered United States International University-Africa to a resounding 9-0 win over Multimedia University (MMU) in a Kenya Hockey Union Women's Premier League match on Saturday.

The one sided university derby played at the City Park Stadium saw USIU-A assert its dominance with five goals in the first quarter. They exposed the MMU defence with relative ease.

The win enabled them to close the gap on league leaders Telkom Orange. USIU-A are now three points behind the leaders on 21 points having each played eight matches.

The speedy, Kuria who had not scored in four matches set the ball rolling after sounding the board in the eighth minute. Mbugua then converted a penalty corner shortly after the match restarted following their opener.

The dependable captain was having an early field day as she got her brace in the 11th minute. MMU players were bombarded further by USIU-A Spartans through Kuria who easily weaved her way past the defence and was given time to shoot in the 13th minute.

Sandra Vodoti scored for the second straight match two minutes later to ensure an emphatic 5-0 lead. Mbugua completed her hat trick in the 18th minute while substitute Perez Akinyi piled further misery for  MMU a minute later.

USIU-A, who were attacking with ferocity went into halftime 7-0 ahead.

Florence Karanja converted Mbugua’s well taken penalty corner in the 36th minute before Kuria rounded up the scoring in the 50th minute. MMU have now lost four of their last six matches and lie ninth on the 11 team standings.

JKUAT notched third win

In the National League 'B’, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture Science and Technology notched their third win in five matches after edging out Kabarak University 3-1.

Terrance Pkenden’s strikes in either half guided JKUAT to the victory. He slotted home in the third and 21st minute. Paul Barasa got the second goal for JKUAT.

Kabarak University’s Reinland Karani got the consolation goal from a penalty corner in the 25th minute. His team is still winless in six matches are just three points ahead Karate Axiom who are in the bottom.

In another match, a Danston Barasa hat trick inspired Multimedia University to a comprehensive 6-1 win over Dedan Kimathi University. Barasa struck field goals in the 14th, 40th and 51st minute. Moses Ademba scored a brace from penalty corners in the rout.

He was on target in the 29th minute and 55th minute.Bringson Kadanya scored MMU’s second goal in the 9th minute. Kennedy Matsuo scored the consolation goal for Dedan Kimathi University in the 11th minute.
