Olympic champion Sumgong tests positive for EPO

The Kenyan athletic fraternity woke up to the shocking news that Jemima Sumgong, the Rio Olympics champion had tested positive for the banned blood-booster EPO during an out-of competition test by the IAAF.

A statement by the IAAF read: “The IAAF can confirm that an anti-doping rule violation case concerning Jemima Sumgong (Kenya) has commenced this week. The athlete tested positive for EPO (Erythropoietin) following a no-notice test conducted by the IAAF in Kenya.

"This was part of an enhanced IAAF out-of-competition testing program dedicated to elite marathon runners which is supported by the Abbott World Marathon Majors Group.”

Rita Jeptoo, a former training partner of Sumgong has been banned for four years after testing positive for the same substance a EPO. She is managed by Rossa Associati who also manages Jeptoo, Mathew Kisiro, Agatha Jeruto.

The exploits in Brazil earned Sumgong a promotion from a Private to Corporal at the Kenya Air Force last year.
