Omaido too hot for UoN

Red hot striker Audrey Omaido scored four goals as Telkom Orange, the defending  Kenya Hockey Union women's Premier Leaguechampions Telkom Orange overran the University of Nairobi 11-0 at the City Park Stadium on Sunday.

The champions are unbeaten after four matches. They beat Strathmore University 2-0 on Saturday to take their Easter weekend goal tally to 13.

Against UoN, Jos Openda, the Telkom Orange coach Jos Openda made some changes to his starting line up.

Second choice goalkeeper Ruth Njoki got her first start of the campaign ahead of regular Cynthia Onyango.

Dependable midfield powerhouse Lilian Aura was absent from the match squad all together after sustaining an ankle sprain on Saturday.

As expected Telkom Orange dominated the match and the floodgates opened the moment they found their first goal. Rachel Ousa opened the scoring after a fluid passing move in the 11th minute.

Omaido struck a minute later before Caroline Guchu and Omaido added further goals in the 16th and 25th minute respectively.

Defender Beatrice Wekesa, who joined the side from United States International University-Africa got her first goal for her new team in the 26th minute.

Great composure

Omaido showed great composure to poke home past goalkeeper Quinter Okore in the 29th minute as the teams went out for the break.

In the second half, Telkom Orange picked up from where they left with defender Flavia Mutiva scoring a brace in the space of three minutes.

First, she was on hand to convert Omaido’s penalty corner in the 38th minute before a solid burst into the circle and a crisp shot was clinical three minutes later.

Veteran striker Jackline Mwangi, who had a quiet game found the net in the 42nd minute from Barbara Simiyu’s assist before Omaido scored her fourth in the 54th minute.

Speedy wing player Maureen Okumu who gave UoN defenders a torrid time summed up a fruitful morning by rounding up the scoring in the 56th minute.

“It was an easy match for us as they did not trouble us. We wanted to score many goals in this match and we did. The team is playing well and within our system. I am happy with the result and looking forward to the next match,” Openda said.

Butali Sugar gained sweet

In the men’s Premier League, returnees Frank Wanangwe and Barnabas Odhiambo scored as Butali Sugar gained sweet revenge with a 3-1 win over defending champions Strathmore University.

The duo had only just returned to the side after nagging knee injuries kept them out. Defender Constant Wakhura came back to haunt his former team as he converted a penalty corner in the 17th minute.

Wanangwe doubled Butali Sugar’s lead in the 36th minute before the students’ dangerman Festus Onyango scored his third goal in two games in the 41st minute to make it 2-1.

Odhiambo came off the bench to increase Butali Sugar’s lead in the 51st minute. The students have now suffered back to back losses and gone four games without a win.

In the National League, Sidney Onyango scored a brace as Kisumu based Bay Club picked up their second win of the weekend with a 4-0 thumping of Karate Axiom.

Chances at goal

On Saturday, they left it late to beat Wazalendo Youth by a solitary goal. In this match, early goals settled the tie with Bay Club dominating possession and chances at goal.

Onyango opened the scoring in the ninth minute before Brian Luchetu got his second goal in two games a minute later.

Further field goals by Onyango (13th minute) and Roy Rowlands (17th minute) sealed the win.

In another match, Brian Otieno converted a last gasp winner from a penalty corner as Youngsters recovered from a goal down to beat Dedan Kimathi University 2-1.

The students took a 29th minute lead through Fred Nyaka before Levy Otieno equalised with three minutes left in the match.

The drama was not over as Brian Otieno broke the students’ hearts with virtually the last touch of the match after slotting home from a penalty corner in the 60th minute.
