The 2015 Masaku International 7s rugby tournament will be held from June 30 to July 5 at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.

Organizers of the annual tourney have committed to making sure they put a better show than last year when it attracted huge negative publicity.

Early preparations have already began with a key sponsor on board. On Monday, Kilunda Rugby Football Club received a sponsorship package of Sh. 1.9 million from Gelian Hotel. Alphonse Kioko, the Gelian Hotel chairman, said their entry this year was to partly address challenges previously experienced during the event.

The hotel will provide key amenities like gym and recreational facilities to participants. Machakos County Executive for Tourism, Sports and Culture Faith Wathome was present and gave the assurance of their support.

She outlined some of the measures to be put in place in avoiding a repeat of a similar scenario from last year. Transport has been given top consideration as there will be five possible entries and exits to Machakos Town.

This was a major challenge last year as fans spent the night on the road owing to heavy traffic snarl up. Furthermore, the county government has invested heavily on security by increasing number of officers as well as their capacity in the anti-terrorism area.

Kenyatta Stadium will be rehabilitated ahead of the tournament that promises to be bigger, better and bolder.

The main event to take place from July 3-5 will be preceded by age grade rugby bringing together primary schools and then progressing to secondary schools, colleges, and universities.

International teams from Fiji, Australia, USA, UK, Europe, Africa and Asia are lined up for invitation to compete alongside local sides. Tabadamu from Fiji are the defending champions.
