Former national cricket team skipper Maurice Ouma will lead a Nairobi Province Cricket Association (NPCA) Select Team that will take part in an inaugural Sir Vizzy Cricket tournament in India.

The former national team wicket keeper who was the leading scorer in last year’s NPCA Super league will lead a squad of 16 players selected on their performance in the NPCA league for the last two seasons.

The team that will be coached by another former national wicket keeper David Obuya will leave the country on Friday for the four-day event organized by Andhra Cricket Association.

Besides Nairobi Gymkhana captain Karan Kaul, James Ngoche and Ouma, the squad is made up of uncapped national team players and national under-19 players.

The absence of the regular national team players in the touring party is because the national team is also preparing for a tour of South Africa later next week.

As a result, three under-19 players; Thomas Ochieng, Aman Gandhi and Sachin Bhudia have been given an opportunity to get exposure ahead of the under-19 ICC World Cup set for early next year.

James Ngoche who has not played for the national team for three years now since being cited for suspect bowling has also been drafted the team that has three Swamibapa players.

Defending league champions Stray Lions provides the bulk of the players. They have five players in the squad.

Making up the squad from the Peponi School-based side include Uganda all rounder Roger Mukasa, Abraham Vadada, Nikil Date, Ashiwaryia Surve and Haraj Singh Sohal.

The tournament to be played in Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram will involve Andhra Cricket Association, Gujarat Cricket Association, Andhra President’s XI, Himachal Cricket Association, Indian Oil Company, Oil and Natural Gas Commission, Baroda Cricket Association and NPCA Select team.

“NPCA believe that this is a very important tour that will go a long way in improving the standards of the game in our county and country at large. It should be noted that NPCA is undertaking this tour after a lapse of more than a dozen years´NPCA chairman Tom Tikolo said.

He added: “In the past Kenya has had cordial relations with India which enabled our cricketers bring glory to Kenya by reaching the 2003 ICC CWC. We intend to take the same route for our climb back to the pinnacle of world cricket starting with this tour to Andhra."
