over 14000 to compete in the Nairobi Marathon

Oct 30, 2010

It’s all systems go for 14,300 plus runners who will compete in the seventh edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon on Sunday that begins outside the Nyayo National stadium.

The runners will compete in the 42km, 21km, 10km and the 2.5 km races.719 runners will be looking to become millionaires in the men and women’s race in the full marathon.

The half marathon has attracted just over 3000 runners with the bulk of the entries in the 10km (5,616). 74 competitors have entered in the wheelchair men and women’s races.

The elite runners will use the same route used last year setting off outside Nyayo National stadium and heading back to the stadium via Mombasa road.

There is an added advantage for the elite runners in the 42km who will be looking to earn a bonus of Ksh.250 000 to the additional prize money of 1.5 million shillings on offer for any athlete who will break the course records.

The current course record in the men’s set in 2009 by Moses Kigen stands at 2:10.12 while the women’s fastest time of 2:33.42 was set by Emma Muthoni in 2008.

The course records are possible on Sunday, as the race organisers have slightly redesigned the course removing the hilly sections.
