Plucky Gor Mahia gives chase

Sep 26, 2010

Two goals in each half from set pieces settled Gor Mahia's nerves in a 2-0 win over Mahakama at Nairobi’s City Stadium on Sunday.

After 37 minutes of seesaw action, Gor won a free kick on the right edge of the box. Ibrahim Kitawi, who has recently seen very little action, stepped up and his delicately floated free kick drifted over the Mahakama wall into the right top corner of the net.

In the second period Gor employed a hit-and-run strategy, speeding up their opponents whenever they gained possession. The game plan, didn't work very well as Zedekiah 'Zico' Otieno's men seemed to run out of gas and ideas within no time.

Saving grace came in the 63rd minute after George 'Blackberry' Odhiambo was fouled in a mirror image of the position that resulted in the first goal.

This time though, it was skipper Julius 'Awillo' Owino who lobbed an indirect free kick into the danger zone. Kevin Omondi received, controlled and beautifully swept the ball past Benson Mungai on the Mahakama goal.

The score line was somewhat flattering since the much-improved Mahakama gave just as much as they received. Its unlucky for them that they got nothing out of the match and remain rooted at the basement.

Gor will remain second on 45 points, six behind Ulinzi Star who beat KB 3-0 at Naivasha's Karuturi Sports Stadium. George Otieno, Vincent Onyango and Antony Nderitu scored for Ulinzi in the 47th, 56th and 76th minutes respectively.

Elsewhere, Tusker overcame Thika United 1-0 at the Nyayo National Stadium to move to third place on 44 points. Fred Ajwang was the scorer of the lone goal.

After their heavy defeat at the hands of Western Stima on Saturday, champions Sofapaka have swapped places with Tusker and are now 10 points adrift of leaders Ulinzi.

High riding Sony Sugar notched a sixth straight victory after beating Karuturi Sports 2-1 at home. The sugar belt team has amassed 37 points and will consolidate their fifth position placement.

KPL action resumes on Wednesday when Mathare United hosts AFC Leopards at the Nyayo National Stadium.
