Kenya booked a date with Russia in the Challenge Trophy semi-final after rallying from 7-12 down to beat Japan 24-17 in the quarter final of the Hong Kong Sevens.

Augustine Lugonzo opened the scores after Kenya were awarded two successive penalties and Sam Oliech converted for a 7-0 lead.

But, Japan were back on level terms with a converted try by Kaemeli Soejima after several missed tackles.

Just before the break, Japan led from a try by Rikiya Oishi after a good run by Soejima.

Second half substitute, Bush Mwale sold a huge dummy to the Japanese and strode under the sticks. Oliech added the extras for the lead to change hands for the third time.

In this half, Kenya were more composed and committed less errors. Oliech scored the third try for Kenya at the right hand corner and stood still in celebration. He missed the conversion as Kenya led 19-12.

Dai Ozawa pulled back one for Japan to narrow the gap 19-17 in Kenya’s favor before a characteristic run by Frank Wanyama saw him dive over for the 24-17 win after Soejima was sent to the naughty chair.
