The 2015 Safaricom Sports Personality of the Year awards will be drumming up support for a clean sport in wake of doping cases amongst the country’s famed runners.

Under the theme ‘Take responsibility, tay clean’ the 2015 awards which was launched on Wednesday in Nairobi, will culminate with the awards gala on January 15, 2016 at the KICC.

The 12th edition of the awards will again have mobile phone service provider, Safaricom sponsoring the event to the tune of Ksh.15 million with pay Television channel SuperSports owned by Multichoice pumping in Ksh.1.5 million.

SOYA patron and founder Paul Tergat presided over the launch which also marks the beginning of the public nominations across the 16 categories said this year’s theme was a call for action to Kenyans to protect their sports.

“The theme thus is SOYA’s call to action by sports people and all stakeholders at various levels to take personal responsibility towards ensuring that our sports is clean in its entirety. It is also recognition that sports thrive best at a clean environment, physical or otherwise thus the need for every lover of sports to actively create and maintain a conducive environment for and, through our sports,” said Tergat who is also an IOC member.

Joseph Ogutu, the Safaricom Director of Strategy and Innovation lauded SOYA’s efforts to celebrate and rewards athletes and promised the company’s unrelenting support.

“As a company we are committed to supporting events and sports that are ran fairly and transparently and have structures that are transparent and are in the interest of developing sports,”he said.

Auka Gecheo the General Manager of Super Sport Africa presented his company’s sponsorship to the SOYA founder and Chair of Panel of judges Watson Karuma of NTV which will also include production and filming of the event.

Tough selection process

The panel of judges comprising of sports writers, reporters and editors has a huge task ahead of picking the finest sports men from a season that had a series of Olympic qualifiers for Kenyan teams and athletes, local and regional competition as well as the World athletics championships in Beijing where Kenya topped the medal table for the first time in the event history.

The judges will not only be looking at performances locally and abroad but will also consider consistent athletes, the discipline, impact of their achievements in their respective sports among others.
