Ulinzi Stars’ hopes of winning this year’s GOtv Shield after reaching the final of the 2016 edition fell flat after losing out by a solitary goal to SoNy Sugar in Nakuru on Saturday.

The military side have not seen the best of days in the past few matches and had to struggle in the first round before beating fifth tier side Wajiji FC 1-0 in Machakos.

On Saturday, SoNy who had picked a league point with a 1-1 draw in their last meeting at the same venue two weeks ago ensured they went one better this time.

Coincidentally, Amos Asembeka who scored the lone goal in the last match between them also popped up for the party again, scoring SoNy’s goal in the fourth minute.

“It was a very tough match and I am happy with my boys and how we performed today. It was a worthy win because we worked very hard for it,” Salim Babu, the sugar millers’ coach said after the game.

Ulinzi’s Ben Nyangweso was left ruing missed chances and was hugely disappointed that the team has dropped off one of their prime targets this season.

“It is very disappointing but the thing that has been costing us is finishing. It is sad we lost but now we have to put our heads high and put our energy in the league,” the tactician noted.

Leopards claw Nairobi Stima

Elsewhere, AFC Leopards’ star finally showed some signs of light with a 2-0 win over Nairobi Stima in Mumias.

This was the first loss for the National Super League side in 14 matches and Ingwe handed themselves a major boost especially having struggled in the league.

New signing Aziz Okaka and defender Joshua Mawira finished off the job within the first 11 minutes.

Okaka, making his first start for AFC Leopards opened the scoring in the third minute with a neat finish from a Dennis Sikhayi pass.

Defender Mawira then nodded home the second in the 11th minute from a Keziron Kizito cross.

Tom Juma, the stand in coach was impressed with the result and the performance of the new boys especially Burundian forward Alex Kitenge who was making his debut.

In the second half, Stima upped their attacking game, but AFC Leopards managed to hold them off and should have had a goal of their own but Vincent Oburu’s shot on the hour mark came off the upright.

Sofapaka ease to next round

Elsewhere, 2014 champions Sofapaka eased into the next round with a 1-0 win over Western Stima at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Hillary Echesa scored the all important goal for Batoto ba Mungu connecting home a Meshack Karani cross.

In an earlier kick off, Gambian striker Ebrimah Sanneh scored his second goal in as many matches as Kariobangi Sharks went through with a 2-0 win over Kenpoly.

Sanneh opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a calm finish after dribbling into the box.

The Gambian almost added his second on the half hour mark, but he had a header fly inches wide.

Kariobangi Sharks finished off the job with Stephen Odhiambo striking a superb freekick in the 66th minute.

At the Mbaraki Sports Club, Division 1 Zone B side Eldoret Youth edged out home team Young Divers 2-0.

Two goals in the first half by Kevin Mwanzi in the 8th minute and Kevin Cheti in the 26th minute were enough to see the Eldoret side through.
