Kenya needed to beat England by 21 points to qualify for the cup quarters of Paris Sevens, the ninth tournament of the World Rugby Sevens World Series.

They fell short after drawing 12-12 against England failing to break a six-year losing streak.

Tries by Frank Wanyama and Dennis Ombachi saw Kenya hold England who finished top of Pool C and are up against the USA in the cup quarters.

Kenya will play against Argentina who finished last in Pool B behind New Zealand, USA and Wales.

In their opening match, a yellow card to Sam Oliech saw France claw back and beat Kenya 22-14. Kenya had led 14-5 from tries by Wanyama and Billy Odhiambo.

When Oliech was on the naughty chair bench, Jean Pascal Barraque scored twice and returning Virimi Vakatawa once.

Kenya bounced back in the second match against newly promoted Spain by winning 26-14.

Andrew Amonde opened the scoring and Odhiambo scored the second for a 12-7 lead at halftime. Ombachi and Agero scored a try each in the second half.

Try scorers in the match against England were Ombachi and Wanyama.

There were big upsets from the first match when a reurgent Samoa beat Fiji 19-17. Then in the fifth match, Scotland beat South Africa, the Series leaders 19-12.

Samoa continued with their upbeat form by overcoming Australia 21-14. Scotland were not satisfied with their two wins and collected a third by upsetting the top seeds Canada - who won their first cup in Singapore - 19-26.

They completed a formality 31-14 against Japan who could be relegated at the end of the Series. Wales and Argentina provided the highest combined score for the day. Wales won 47-28.

The second day has interesting fixtures with the main one between England and the USA coached by Simon Amor and Mike Friday.
