Goals by speedy forward Maureen Okumu and defender Terry Juma were enough for Telkom Orange to break down a stubborn Strathmore University in a Kenya Hockey Union women’s Premier league match at the City Park Stadium on Saturday.

In this match, Telkom Orange played their usual high pressing game but the students were unrelenting by giving as much as they took with forays in the opponents half.

The first chance of the match fell to veteran striker Jackline Mwangi in the fourth minute after receiving a long pass from defender Flavia Mutiva.

She unleashed a snap shot from the centre but an alert Ivin Onyango was alert .

Four minutes later, Mwangi was left free again in the circle. Defender Jane Maragu did brilliantly to shield Mwangi as she released her shot which allowed Onyango to make a save.

In the 10th minute, Telkom Orange’s Audrey Omaido found Juma whose hard shot was parried by Onyango as the teams went goalless at the interval.

Telkom Orange continued their dominance the second quarter, enjoyed possession and got into goal-scoring positions at will. But the students defended bravely to keep the scores level.

Telkom Orange could have made more of their 21st minute chance when Barbara Simiyu surged forward with teammates Mwangi and Okumu in a three on one situation against Onyango in goal.

Maragu rushed back to make a goal-saving interception by cutting out Simiyu’s cross into the circle.

Found a goal out of nothing

For all their missed chances, the 19-time league champions found a goal out of nothing in the 24th minute.

Substitute Caroline Guchu picked the ball from the halfway line before sending a cross field ball that Okumu made contact with to side foot Onyango as it went into the net.

In the third quarter, Strathmore University created their first chance of the match when captain Yvonne Karanja evaded Juma’s challenge.before sending a low cross but Denise Odongo failed to finish from a metre out.

Telkom Orange doubled their lead in the fourth quarter from a penalty corner by Omaido who set up Juma. The no nonsense defender scored with a vicious low shot in the bottom left corner.

Strathmore University regrouped and went in search of a goal. In the 53rd minute, lethal striker Gilly Okumu, who was isolated throughout the game conjured up a chance .

She drove into opposition territory before her hard shot hit the side board. Telkom Orange comfortably closed out the match.

“I am happy with the win and that we are heading towards the end of the first leg without conceding a goal. Strathmore has always been a bogey team for us. I do not know what happens but we always struggle to play our game when we face them,” Telkom Orange coach Jos Openda said after the match.

“We were not sharp today and were unlucky at times. It was a good match and I believe we should have been more aggressive to win balls and contain them,” Okumu said.
