Tusker,Gor Mahia in barren draw as Sofapaka thrash Congo

May 22, 2011

Congo United were back to where they belong soaking in five goals against Sofapaka in the heaviest defeat this season as Rangers moved to second spot in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) log after 13 rounds of matches.

Veteran striker John Baraza top scorer in the last two seasons opened the goal hunt for Sofapaka with a 41st minute effort giving the winners a 1-0 lead at the break. Bob Mugalia made it two in the 48th minute.  Patrick Petit Kagogo was on the mark in the 54th minute paving way for Baraza to net his brace.

John Onami finished off the rout in injury time. The win is the second for Sofapaka since beating Tusker 1-0 on April 5 and brings to an end the teams’ six games winless run.

For the coastal side it brought to an end their impressive run in the competition where they had scooped eight points out of a possible 12.

Charles Okwemba headed Rangers to second spot in the standings after scoring the lone goal against Thika United in a 1-0 win at Nyayo Stadium

The match was seemingly headed for a draw but a corner delivered by former Tusker and Sofapaka midfielder Edward Kauka found veteran Charles Okwemba unmarked and he headed home.

KCB, second placed at the start of the day fell 1-0 to Karuturi to drop to third place.

In Mumias, Tusker FC settled for a barren draw with Gor Mahia. Security was tight in and out of Mumias Sports Complex with Police in anti-riot gear deployed to ward off any violence from highly charged fans who filled the venue to capacity.

Six yellow cards were issued, four for Gor players and two for Tusker. Tusker remains at the top of the standings despite not winning against Gor.

Sunday results:

Tusker 0 Gor 0,  Karuturi 1 KCB 0, Rangers 1 Thika United 0,  Ulinzi 2  City Stars 1 , Mathare United 0 Chemelil 0
