Tusker open six point lead in the Premier league

Sep 12, 2011

Gor Mahia’s 2-1 stumble at City Stadium on Saturday at the hands of Congo United has allowed Tusker FC to open up a commanding six-point lead as the Kenyan Premier League enters homestretch.

To many, it's more like Tusker FC are saving their best for last, but Ulinzi Stars, Chemelil Sugar and Sofapaka are all within reach, with only eight matches left to the end of this season.

Tusker's head coach, Sammy Omollo proved the better tactician as the brewers pumped two goals past a stunned Thika United in their own backyard, Thika Municipal Stadium. On their part, Gor Mahia took the game to United from the whistle but thanks to their inept finishing in front of goal, they were leaking their wounds instead and decided to mete out their anger on their head coach Zedekiah Otieno.

And it looks as though the Tusker versus Ulinzi Stars 7pm showdown on Thursday at Nyayo National Stadium could now decide the destiny of the top flight crown.

“We are remaining with two tough matches, against Ulinzi and Sofapaka. Our aim will be to pocket at least a point from each of those matches,” said Tusker’s head coach, Sammy Omollo.

“The soldiers are amongst our fiercest rivals and should we get the three points on Thursday, we will be very happy.”

Another frantic weekend of football went by, as Sofapaka were in exemplary form as they saw Western Stima 5-0, while the biggest surprise for the weekend was maybe this Gor loss, which now sees the K’Ogalo side eight points behind Tusker.

Nairobi City Stars continued to recreate their own version of The Great Escape, Congo’s KPL future remains in jeopardy, their weekend win notwithstanding, while last year’s champions Ulinzi Stars, Chemelil Sugar and Sofapaka are all gunning for the coveted title with only eight rounds of matches to the end of the league.

Weekend results: Sony Sugar 3 Karuturi Sports 2, Thika United 0 Tusker 2, Gor Mahia 1 Congo United 2, Chemelil Sugar 3 Rangers 0, Bandari 0 AFC Leopards 0, Sofapaka 5 Western Stima 0, City Stars 3 KCB 1.
