Tusker stun Simba in friendly

Dec 29, 2012

Kenya champions Tusker warned fellow East Africans that they intend to be the club to beat in the region when they hammered Tanzanian giant, Simba, 3-0 in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.

Following the 1-0 triumph over Simba’s bitter city rivals Young Africans on Boxing Day, a Tusker side full of new signings and preparing for forthcoming Africa Champions League, left a usually proud Dar es Salaam stunned.

The Kenyans have not finished with Tanzania as they head to Zanzibar to take part in the eight-team Mapinduzi Cup between January 2 and 12.

Beating both Yanga and Simba is an enviable reputation that will follow Tusker in Zanzibar where they open the tournament campaign on Wednesday against Zanzibar side, Bandari.

Against Simba it was Jesse Were, the forward recently signed from Mathare United, who triggered an excellent all-round performance with a brace of goals in the 37th and 45th minutes.

Frederick Onyango weighed in another strike in the 54 minute. Tusker will be taking part for the first time in the annual Mapinduzi Cup organised by the Zanzibar Football Association to commemorate Zanzibar’s revolution of January 12 1964.

Another Dar es Salaam giant, Azam FC, were last year’s winners of tournament.
