Ulinzi & Gor Mahia nominated for SOYA awards

Nov 11, 2010

Kenya Premier league sides Ulinzi and Gor Mahia FC are among the nominees in the team category for the 2010 Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

The two Football clubs have been nominated alongside Rugby sides Mwamba and Kenya Harlequins, world cross-country and World half marathon teams.

League leaders Ulinzi have been very consistent this season with some dominant performances and need to win Sunday’s game against Karuturi Sports in Nakuru to lift their fourth KPL title.

Gor Mahia on the other hand have kept the pressure on the Military side and are just one point adrift. K’ogalo will be hoping that Ulinzi slips on Sunday, and they win against Nairobi City Stars at the City Stadium to win the league.

Whoever wins the crown on Sunday will undoubtedly have an advantage when the SOYA panellists pick the overall team winner to be announced at the awards ceremony on December 10, at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, Nairobi.

National Sevens Circuit champions Mwamba, who have the bulk of players featuring in the national side, are also favoured to win the men’s team title, won by the Kenyan sevens team last year.

But Quins profile for the year in focus has also been impressive; winning the Kenya Cup and the Driftwood sevens in Mombasa to finish runners up in the national circuit.

The senior men’s cross country team led by Gold medallist Joseph Ebuya that won the team title in Poland is also in the running together with the victorious world half marathon squad of five runners.

The two athletics teams have also been nominated in the women’s team category after winning the overall cross country team title in Bydgoszcz and the world half marathon in Nanning, china.

Hockey Premier league and continental club champions Telkom Orange; Africa Club volleyball champions Kenya Prisons and the Kenya volleyball team-Africa’s flag bearers at the ongoing World championships in Japan are also among the contenders for the ladies team title.
