Ulinzi open league campaign against Sofapaka

Feb 07, 2011

Holders Ulinzi Stars begin their defence of the Kenya Premier League title with a home game against 2009 Champions Sofapaka on February, 20.

The Ulinzi/Sofapaka game will be the only match on the opening day of the season with the next round of matches are scheduled for the following weekend.

Ulinzi will be looking to bounce back from their humiliating 4-0 loss to Egyptian champions Zamalek in the African champions league first leg, while big spending Sofapaka will be looking for a solid start as they look to chase the league title that eluded them last season finishing fourth.

Sofapaka-the 2010 FKL Cup winners will host Angola’s AS Aviacao, a week earlier in the return leg of the Confederation cup.
The teams were dead even last season playing to a barren draw in the first leg fixture and drawing 1-1 in the return match.
With new coach, Francis Kimanzi and five signings, a lot is expected of the ‘Children of God’ as they currently also form the bulk of players to the national team.

According to the fixtures released on Monday by KPL Chief Executive Officer Jack Oguda, runners up Gor Mahia open their season against troubled Rangers on February 26, while their archrivals AFC Leopards have a date with former Champions Tusker FC.

After narrowly missing out on the league title least season, Gor Mahia goes into the game  on the back of a morale boosting 2-1 win over Ghana’s Black Stars in a pre-season friendly.

The second match day will also see Ulinzi stars travel to Naivasha to play Thika United as Sofapaka host Mathare United at Nyayo a day later.

In other games scheduled for February 26,newly promoted Bandari will host Chemilil Sugar;Karuturi sports take on City Stars and Western Stima host KCB at the Bukhungu stadium.

Newly promoted Congo United will be away to Sony Sugar a day later.

There are 16 teams featuring in the premier league this season with Coast based Congo United and Bandari replacing red Berets and Mahakama who were relegated last season.

Red Berets has since been disbanded with Rangers looking to find a sponsor to guarantee their stay in top flight football following the last minute withdrawal of Posta.
