In-form opener Abdul Waheed scored his second half-century of the Cricket Kenya Quadrangular Twenty20 series to help Saudi Arabia win the title with a seven wickets win over Qatar at Nairobi Jaffery’s on Friday.

Waheed remained unbeaten on 98 off 25 balls, hitting two fours to seal the chase, which included 14 fours and two series chasing a competitive 162 for 9. He shared various stands that led them into winning the match with 12 balls to spare.

Waheed and Mujeeb-ur-Rehman gave Saudi Arabia a solid start as they took the side to 35 for no loss after just 3.1 overs. Mujeeb-ur-Rehman then broke the stand when he dismissed Saeed who, who contributed 22 off 12 balls.

The opener then guided Saudi Arabia to 100 for 1 at the halfway stage of their chase in a stand with Hammad Saeed. It’s in this stand that he reached his fifty runs from 36 balls.

Qatar lost their second wicket after going past the 100 mark, when Mohammed Nadeem took a brilliant caught and bowled catch to dismiss Hammad Saeed on 26 from 22 balls in the 12th over.

Muhammad Abbasi came in at number four and scored 10 from 14 balls before being caught behind off Iqbal Hussain with eight required. He ended the match with two consecutive boundaries off Iqbal Hussain.

Waheed’s ton overshadowed Qatar’s batting display that had seen them share partnerships that eventually saw them end on 162 after some useful contribution from their middle order batsmen.

Iman-ul-Haq and Faisal Javid Khan put on 20 for the first wicket before Haq and Mohammad Rizlan got the scores to 53 after only 4.5 overs.

Haq fell on 43 from 25 balls in the fifth over-a dismissal that opened a little wicket gates as they lost four more wickets for 48 runs before Imran Ashraf with 32 from 23 balls saw them get to 150 in 18 overs before the tail end led them to the final score of 162.

Saudi Arabia captain Shoaib Ali was delighted with the win giving credit to his players for a good show. “I am impressed with the performance everyone put in the whole series. We have a good show and we are happy with the improvement we have seen,” Ali said.

His Qatar counterpart Mohammed Awais was also positive with his side’s performance saying they have gained valuable experience that will help them as they seek to play in ICC events.
