Allan Wanga’s El Merreikh are through to the semi-final of the 2014 Cecafa Kagame Cup after they beat Azam FC of Tanzania Mainland 4-3 on post match penalties at the regional Nyamirambo stadium on Wednesday.

They play Uganda’s KCCA who knocked out South Sudan’s Atlabara 3-1 in the other quarter final.

The match between El Merreikh and Azam FC followed a familiar pattern of the first two quarterfinal matches which were all decided on penalties.

Wanga, signed by El Merreikh from AFC Leopards came in as a substitute and slotted one of the penalties. Others who scored from the spot were Magdi Abdelatif, Al Gaffer Hussein and Ayman Said Mohammed.

Jamal Salim, the El Merreikh goalkeeper saved a penalty by Lionel Saint Preux. Scorers for Azam FC were goalkeeper Aggrey Morris, Didier Kavumbagu and Erasto Nyoni. Shomari Kapombe missed.

In the second match, there was no doubt about who would emerge top when KCCA set the pace early and were rewarded with a goal by Brian Majwega in the fifth minute. Another Brian (Umony) doubled the scored in the 32nd minute.

On resumption, KCCA were content with defending their two-goal lead but Hakim Ssenkumba had other ideas adding the third in the 74th minute to cement their place in the semis. Olivier Paul scored the lone goal for Atlabara from the spot.

The semi finals are set for Friday at Nyamirambo. APR and Police meet in an all-Rwanda affair while El Merreikh play KCCA.
