• ‘Ugandan’ International Inspires Mwamba Over Impala

Jan 11, 2011-George Scott Oluoch could have been playing for Kenya but was snapped by Uganda at the peak of his rugby career and now dons the Uganda jersey.  He is Kenyan and honed his skills at Nairobi Railway Club.

Last weekend, the burly forward was back as a ‘guest’ player for Mwamba. It was evident why Uganda did not bat an eyelid to naturalize him.  Oluoch was on the lips of the ‘Kulabu’ players. “This guy is a beast. He is just in his world,” was how Mwamba players described his second half performance. This talent that Kenya lost ploughed through the Impala scrum at will!

There are some of the unsung heroes of the Mwamba/Impala match.  Sidney Nderitu “just married” who had taken time off from the game returned from a semi-retirement, 18-year old Morgan Muinde is another find. The former Aquinas High student has steadily climbed through the ranks since he started turning out at Mwamba while in form two and played his first ESS match last year while in form four. He has held in well for Chris Kanyoi who has back problems.

Dennis Ombachi who has been injured has returned to light training. Francis Akatu is perhaps the fastest prop in the Kenya Cup league at the moment because Lawrence Buyachi from Impala has moved to backrow. On the opposite end, the Simiyu brothers Innocent and Nato, Kevin Umbuge, Vincent Mose and Buyachi stood out. Tito Oduk scored 21 of the 31 points, 16 from his left foot.

Nakuru RFC finally got their first win of the league campaign, a 22-18 win over home side Nondies at the Jamhuri Park. Paul Ogolla and Calvin Otieno scored a try each for Nakuru and Javan Murayi added four penalties. Nondies missed the services of Boby Oyugi who has been posted to Mombasa by his employers. Edwin Shimenga is injured and did not play for Nakuru.

Kenya Commercial Bank led home side Mean Machine 15-13 but pulled away in the second half, registering a 60-23 result while Quins, leading 13-7 at half time, ran off with a 47-7 win over home side Strathmore University.

In the Eric Shirley Shield quarter finals,  defending champions Homeboyz RFC overran visiting Webuye 53-5 to put one foot in the semis with the second leg still to be played in Webuye.

Impala II beat Masinde Muliro 32-7, putting daylight between them and the varsity lads from Kakamega.

Quins II beat visiting Kisumu RFC 13-10 in their first leg fixture. There is still plenty to play for in the return leg at the Kisumu Polytechnic on Saturday, January 15. KCB II were awarded a walkover after Kakamega RFC failed to honor their fixture.
