Kenya Commercial Bank won their first major trophy after a four-year draught by bagging the Kenya Harlequin Christie Sevens tournament by beating Strathmore University 24-10 in the final at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa ground on Sunday.

The bankers last trophy was coincidentally Christie Sevens in 2008. They tore up the scripts which had been written after the first two tournaments which had the names of either Mwamba and Kenya Harlequin FC. The win by KCB ends a gravy train for Mwamba who have been in a spanking form winning Dala and Prinsloo Sevens.

Somebody should have taken note when Kenya Commercial Bank navigated their way through a tough Pool D. They did not, instead, they were writing scripts for the final with some thought of the semi-finals where they expected the bankers would stumble. The writing could have been on the wall from the opening day when Mwamba rallied from 0-14 down to beat Mean Machine in a Pool A match.

It meant that Mwamba were vulnerable despite winning two tournaments in a row. Rugby fans joked about the many KCB branches at the tournaments. Former KCB players are in KCA University, Strathmore University and Homeboyz. So when KCB played Homeboyz, it was like a meeting between friends who knew the abilities of other players only too well. In main Cup the final, Fabian Olando completed an awesome set-piece display with the opening that Collins Kimani converted.

However, Strathmore settled first to claim a turnover before former Impala player Tony Onyango brought them back with a try that Peter Kepha missed the conversion. Both sides attacked furiously after Onyango’s try.

It was the bankers who emerged strong when Philip Wamae danced through the Strathmore line to score. Olando converted for KCB to lead 14-5 at half time. Strathmore matched KCB in physical play and after a nice pick and drive Felix Ayange scored to reduce the deficit at 10-14 only for Kimani to extend KCB’s lead 19-10 with a try sprinting from centre field. Man of the match Andrew Amonde was to drill down the winning try for the bankers on the right corner flag.

Despite their loss in the semis, Mwamba still lead the circuit standings with 70 points while KCb and Quins each have 56 and Nakuru 49.

The circuit takes a one-week break before Mwamba hosts the George Kabeberi Memorial Sevens next weekend.
