Eight new rookies have been named in the Kenya national rugby team which was due to arrived in Kampala on Thursday for the first leg of the annual Elgon Cup match to be played on Saturday.

The new faces are Sammy Warui, Duncan Mwangi (Nakuru), Eden Agero, Nick Barasa, Chris Oduor (Quins), Maurice Mbai (Strathmore University), Daniel Sikuta (Mwamba) and Steve Sakwa (Homeboyz).

Head coach Michael Otieno said this was a provisional team because he was still looking at more players during the Bamburi Super Series.

He has his eyes set on next year’s Rugby World Cup qualifier. Most of the players who have been named to the squad have distinguished themselves in the Kenya Cup.

"We selected this team with several things in mind. We have battle with Uganda later on this year in the CAR Cup's Division 1A where we are the defending champions, and it is good that we get the young players on the team to have a feel of rugby at this level. "

Eden Agero, Nick Barasa and Chris Oduor have been outstanding for Kenya Cup champions Kenya Harlequin FC. Oduor has had a superb game at fullback and Agero at fly-half while Barasa has often crossed the try line.

Otieno is looking at a different combination in his forwards where he will rely on the experience of Lawrence Buyachi, Joel Ng’ang’a and Duncun Ekasi. No Kiptoo or Dennis Mwanja but Dennis Karani, Leslie Libasia and Wilson Kopondo are in good form. An interesting inclusion is that of Nakuru’s Samuel Warui and Duncan Mwangi.

They have been a pillar of strength for the Nakuru RFC side which has silenced critics with their solid performance. Youthful Daniel Sikuta from Mwamba also got the nod. He is a fearless runner and hard tackler.

As expected, the team does not include any of the national seven-a-side team players who are training for the last two legs of the International Rugby Board HSBC World Sevens Series in Scotland and England.

As we predicted, Kenya Harlequin FC prop, Joel Ng’ang’a has been handed the captain’s band and will be assisted by Impala full-back Vincent Mose. This is because Victor Sudi is unavailable.

The women’s side also has several new players which forms a good mix. Abedeen Shikhoyi retains the captaincy. The women’s team was expected to leave for Kampala on Thursday.

They will be coached by Mwamba RFC utility back Steve Sewe in the absence of head coach Sammy Kemmey.
