Rugby was the winner after a tense three week standoff between the Kenya Rugby Union and five Kenya Cup club sides following an announcement of a cease fire on Wednesday. At a joint press conference between the KRU and dissenting clubs, it was announced by the KRU chairman Mwangi Muthee that the Kenya Cup league will kick off on Saturday.

“I am pleased to tell you that the hiatus between established clubs and the union have been settled and Kenya Cup among other leagues will resume fully,” Muthee said.

A joint press conference was one of he conditions given by the dissenting clubs who had stubbornly declined to play last weekend when the league was supposed to have kicked off.

No amount of shadow boxing could break their resolve and they went ahead and registered a company, Rugby Enterprise Ltd which was supposed to source for sponsorship for an alternative league.

The two parties had agreed in principle for an expanded Kenya Cup league with 10 teams but for the modalities which set a bad precedent. These arose from election promises which had been made by the new office to fasttrack some teams into the Kenya Cup league without going through the laid down procedure by the KRU competition which required a team to gain promotion by playing and winning the Eric Shirley Shield League.

Instead, the new office, in a move to ‘thank’ some of their voters suggested that Kisumu RFC (who had not won the ESS league), Mean Machine (who should have been demoted), Kakamega, Mombasa and Western Kenya be added into the league.

Club representatives from Nondescripts RUFC (Thomas Opiyo), Kenya Harlequin FC (Philip Jalango), Chiro Nyinge (Kenya Commercial Bank) and Peter Nduati (Impala) fired the warning shots and gained the support of other clubs to boycott the league until proper procedure was followed. Muthee warned they could be kicked out of the league.

Sources close to him said he felt the clubs did not respect his position. On Wednesday, the impasse was resolved for the moment and Kisumu RFC and Mean Machine will play in the Kenya Cup. Western Bulls will be the second side of Kisumu RFC and will feature in the ESS.

A new development this season is a nationwide league which has two regions Western and Eastern. One issue which remained unresolved was the promotion and relegation especially after Blak Blad rightly claimed promotion after winning the Universities League. Blak Blad have not been happy with the promotion of other clubs to the Kenya Cup.

This issue will be discussed between the KRU and clubs in January next year. “We have agreed to be more interactive in our activities and engage each other frequently so as to avoid washing our dirty linen in public.” Muthee said.

In the only match played last weekend, Strathmore University beat Mwamba 12-3 at the University of nairobi Mean Machine grounds. Both teams do not have a pitch.

Mwamba’s Railway Club ground has been leased to the Kenya parliament. Fixtures Kenya Cup: Nakuru v Kisumu, Nondies v Mwamba, Strathmore v Impala, Homeboyz v KCB, Mean Machine v Quins.
