Chebwogen picks Africa Youth gold in Nigeria

World champion Mercy Chebwogen picked Kenya’s first Gold medal at the Africa Youth Athletics championships in Warri, Nigeria on Thursday.

Chebwogen was never threatened as she dominated from start to finish of the 3000m run, the opening track event of the inaugural championships, crossing the line in 9:17.52 with compatriot Daisy Jepkemei closing in for second in 9:17:69 ahead of Ethiopian’s Mihret Tefera Adhena who timed 9:19.40.

Nigeria and Egyot were the other gold medal winners on the opening day of the four-day event.

Joseph Oreva-Oghene Edafiadhe leap of 6.91metres was enough to earn him the gold medal in the long jump with Ethiopian Mekonen Mesfin Abebe winning silver in 6.85 metres.

Egyptian Khaled Mahmoud, won the Discus event with a throw of 42.40 metres.

Kenya is represented by 10 runners in the championships.
