Dunford Siblings lead Kenyan Swimming team to Maputo

Commonwealth Games 50m Fly champion Jason Dunford and his brother David will lead a strong team 16 swimmers to next months All African Games in Mozambique.

The two brothers together with Sylvia Brunlehner were the only Kenyans who competed at the just concluded World championships in China which served as a good build up for the Pan African games.

Jason narrowly missed out on a medal in the 100m Fly at the World championships where he ranked fourth is favoured to defend the titles he won at the last edition of the All African Games. In Algeri.

The 24 year old swimmer who is based in the US he dominated the Butterfly events picking three Gold medals in the 50,100 and 200m.

David, a freestyle specialist, will be hunting his first All African Games medals to match his success at the 2006 African Championships where he won the 100 and 200m Backstroke events.

Other notable swimmers in the team include seasoned Amar Shah who has represented Kenya at five editions of the world championships, Commonwealth Games and several continental events, Ramadhan Vyombo who competed at the Games in Algeria as well as the Commonwealth Games, Tory Pragassa of Bandari Swimming Club among others.

The team coached by Fakhry Mansoor is expected to report for residential training at the Moi international Sports Centre later this month with the rest of the other teams that will be competing at the Games.

The All-African games will be held from September 3-18. Prior to the African games some members of the Maputo led by Brunlenher will compete at the FINA Youth swimming championships in Lima, Peru from August 16-21.

Brunlenher together with Dabid Buruchara will be banking on the exposure and experience gained from competing at the first Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore last year. The Kenyan Swimming Federation is hoping to send a team of 14 to Lima.
