Flying Start For Kenyan Boxers At World Military Games

Two Kenyan boxers are through to the pre-quarter final of the fifth World Military Games which are being hosted by Brazil in Rio de Jeneiro.

On Monday, Light Weight Moses Njoroge started the medal chase by convincingly beating a Burundian opponent. He will meet homeboy Robson Conceicao in the pre-quarter finals. The Brazillian beat Guinea’s Alseny Sylla 17-3 on the opening day. Light Heavyweight Joshua Ndere is also through to the pre-quarter final after edging out Lithuanian Mantvyd Miliausky 8-5.

The two boxers tied 2-2 in the first round before Ndere won the second 3-1. The third round was close but the Kenyan managed a 3-2 win. Today (Tuesday), Bantam weight Nick Okoth has a date with Korea’s Jin Young Lee and Gitonga climbs back in the ring to face Conceicao in the Lightweight category.

Moses Mathenge is also up up against a Cameroonian Armel Franck in the Light Welter category.

On Wednesday, Welterweight Nickson Abaka fights with South African Amulelani Baloyi.

Ulinzi, Kenya’s soccer team need a win against Ecuador to land a historic semi-final place in the 12-team event. Brazil leads Pool A with six points after winning their two opening matches. Algeria and Surinam are second with three points each and Uruguay is pointless. In Pool B, Egypt have six points while Ulinzi and Ecuador each have three points. France is bottom of this pool without a win.

Qatar lead Pool C with six points ahead of Germany who have three, same as Trinidad and Tobago. The top three teams automatically qualify for the semi-final with the best team getting the fourth slot.
